Phoenix Invests in the Future: $179 Million for Advanced Water Purification

Phoenix just took a huge stride toward a secure water future. In August 2025, the city secured $179 million in federal funding to design and build the North Gateway Advanced Water Purification Facility—a project that will change the way our community thinks about water.

Why This Matters

Water is life in the desert. With rising populations, changing climate conditions, and limited supplies from the Colorado River, securing reliable water sources has become more important than ever. This new facility represents more than just infrastructure—it’s an investment in resilience, sustainability, and the future of Phoenix families.

What the Facility Will Do

The North Gateway Advanced Water Purification Facility will:

  • Produce nearly 7 million gallons of purified drinking water daily

  • Recycle wastewater into clean, safe, drinkable water

  • Support Phoenix’s long-term “augmentation strategy” to secure new water supplies

  • Provide enough purified water to meet the needs of tens of thousands of households

The Bigger Picture

Phoenix is already recognized as a leader in water innovation, and this project only strengthens that reputation. Pairing the North Gateway facility with other city projects, such as the Cave Creek purification facility, ensures a more stable, reliable supply for future generations.

Economic & Community Impact

This funding, made possible through the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bureau of Reclamation, is also an economic win. It creates construction jobs, strengthens infrastructure, and improves housing affordability by supporting long-term water availability. Mayor Kate Gallego summed it up best when she called the project “an investment in Phoenix families and the future of our economy.”

Looking Ahead

With construction and planning underway, the North Gateway Advanced Water Purification Facility is more than just a project—it’s a promise. A promise that Phoenix is not only prepared to meet today’s challenges but is actively building a stronger, more sustainable tomorrow.
